5 For The Future | Gina Star

image

Toolroom Records artist Gina Star is one of the dance music industry’s rising stars. After moving to LA in 2006, she immediately gained attention and began to be considered one of the most talented and sought after DJ’s in the city. Her distinct style of bigroom-progressive house had some of the most exclusive clubs scrambling to book her. In 2009, Gina moved to the UK and began to focus on and further her production skills. Her production style and talent earned support from some of the industry’s most legendary artists like Cirez D, David Guetta, Tiesto, Mark Knight and more. There are some artists that you can’t really place a ceiling on because their potential is literally limitless; Gina is one of those artists. With the launch of her podcast in 2012, Gina was featured on the front page of Beatport and heavily supported on radio shows around the world including BBC Radio 1, Capital FM, iHeart, Sirius & in club charts such as Music Weeks Coolcuts & DMC’s Buzz Chart. We are very excited to be hosting her “Gina Star Podcast” on Thefuture.fm and were lucky enough to have her as our 5 For The Future feature artist of the week. As always, enjoy a short interview and make sure to stay tuned to her channel on Thefuture.fm for exclusive mixes and more.

 1. Introduce yourself in one simple sentence.

Hi, I’m Gina Star and I’m a DJ and producer based out of Los Angeles, CA.

2. If you had to compare your style with any other producer, who would it be and why?

I really like the style of Axwell, Dirty South, and John Dahlback. They all lean towards the more melodic side of progressive house and they often incorporate big vocals.

3. Tell us your opinion on the explosion of EDM in the United States.

I think it’s great that people in the US are being exposed to dance music. The rest of the world already listens to it all the time because it’s on their radio, which is slowly happening here. I hope that Americans can have an open mind and see past the drug culture that’s in the clubs. There’s such a huge back catalog of incredible dance music and I hope people will dig into it and get past the extremely commercial sounding stuff.

4. If you could perform at any festival in the world, which would it be and why?

I would love to play at Coachella in the next couple of years. That festival is so much fun and the dance tents are set up in such an epic way.

5. What can fans most look forward to from you in the upcoming months?

I have a lot of new music coming out in the next few months. I’ve been able to find some very talented vocalists to work with and I really think people are going to enjoy the songs!

Artist Spotlight | DJ Noodles

imageDJ Noodles is a man who has done it all. His experience in radio, production, mixtapes, remixes, and more make him one of the most diverse DJ’s to walk the planet today. So many dj’s get caught up in which genre they’d like to identify themselves with but that doesn’t hinder him. With the unique ability to use records in the way that he wants, whether it is live performing live at the club or in the studio, DJ Noodles has the ability to influence crowds on truly wider scale. His “Sunglasses and Advil” podcast has over 10K Itunes subscribers and his “Fix Your Face Radio” on Sirius XM is the most listened to mix show in America. He has produced for stars like Pitbull, Akon, and Lil Wayne, as well as remixes for Maroon 5, Mary J Blige, and more. From NYC to Boston to Miami, DJ Noodles has held down residencies at many of the premier venues in the U.S. Currently, he is the resident DJ at Vain Nightclub in Orlando, FL. If you want to catch him live, there is no shortage of monthly residencies all throughout the state of Florida. Along with hosting his previously mentioned “Sunglasses and Advil” podcast on Thefuture.fm, DJ Noodles has teamed up with Thefuture.fm to launch his brand new mix series “Sold Out” with international superstar, Pitbull. DJ Noodles “Sold Out” mixtapes are a series of open format party/club mixes, with a heavy focus on exclusive remixes and bootlegs, with celebrity crossover appealing hosts and music from different genres, specifically House/Dance, Top 40, Hip Hop, R&B, Trap and DubStep. We’re pleased to present this week’s Artist Spotlight containing an in-depth interview and the first installment of “Sold Out” with the man himself, DJ Noodles.

1. Introduce yourself in 1 simple sentence.

Whatup, my name is DJ Noodles, and I rock parties, produce records, and fix faces everywhere I go.

2. It seems like you can spin any genre. If you had to classify yourself under one, which would it be?

I hate to have to choose just one, but I am probably most known for the stuff I have done on the hip hop side of things. For years all I played was hip hop, but as I saw the average person start embracing more than one genre of music, I knew that’s the space I needed to be in, and lately I take pride in being known more as an “open format” or “multi format” DJ- I try to blend genres together and not be limited by one label.

3. Did you always want to become a DJ? What would you be doing if you weren’t?

Yea pretty much, I started djing when I was 15 years old, and since then I have been lucky to not just have a great career DJing, but also a radio career and my work as a producer making music.

4. Tell us about the worst gig you’ve ever had. Why was it so bad?

I think any DJ that came up the way I did, really working the club circuit in the cities they lived in, probably can give you a long list of “worst gigs”, it’s something I think everyone goes through especially while on their come up… Any time you have a gig that gets cut short, those are the worst ones. As a DJ I try to have an arc to a set, and theres records and things I really want to get to, and if you get cut short, you are left just anxious to get to the next gig- almost like you were not able to complete a thought. So wether it’s the fire marshall coming in because the venue is too packed, or maybe someone gets in a fight or something stupid like that, any time you get cut short sucks.

5. Do you have any musical influences? DJ’s? Singers? Rappers?

Musically I’m influenced by all types of musicians… From the old music of Motown to Michael Jackson to today’s talent. As a producer I’m a member of an emerging team called Therapist Music, founded by my man DJ Buddha who has produced tons of huge records and has helped Pitbull put together his last several albums— within the Therapist collective there are some dope producers who all inspire me- we have writers and producers from all over the world on the team, and each brings their own sound and flavor.

image

6. We understand that traveling and late nights are part of the job. What’s your favorite late night meal?

I’ve been trying to be a little healthier out there these days and try to get some fruit late night after gigs instead of the traditional fast food options… But nothing beats a good hot dog guy outside of a club - shout out to the stand on Magnolia in Orlando outside VAiN tho… Lol

7. How long do you plan on DJ’ing for? With all your connections, itseems like you’d make a natural transition to the business side after it’s all said and done.

I don’t have a specific end date in mind, I’m having as much fun out there as I ever have and I have been so inspired on the DJ side I feel like there’s no end in sight!! But at some point, my plan is to let my production career take the forefront and focus on music and my work with the Therapist team.

8. If you could perform at any festival in the world, which would it be and why?

I would love to play Coachella- it’s a place where you have such a wide range of acts, I feel like I could bring a great show that the Coachella-goer would love because its a festival not dedicated to only one genre. We could turn up with some crazy top 40 and house bootlegs… then rock some classic DMX… Then get into a crazy TRAP set… Really do anything and just put a great show and set together. Lets get that #NoodlesAtCoachella2014 movement going!!!

9. Sunglasses and Advil is possibly the best name for a podcast we’ve heard. Any stories behind that?

Well I heard Kanye say it in “No Church In The Wild”, and I immediately knew I found the title for my new podcast I was developing. I feel like that phrase is like a testament to the lifestyle we live in these clubs… out all night, loud music, alcohol, the morning after sometimes the only two things you want in the world before you walk outside is a pair of sunglasses and some Advil… And with this podcast, the format is really club music, lots of house bootlegs, progressive house and trap stuff, it just fit right away.

10. Give some advice to the upcoming DJ’s/producers in the world.

For DJs I will tell you this… it’s real easy these days to get set up - Macbook, Serato, maybe a midi controller, for a couple thousand dollars in a few hours you can be set up and call yourself a DJ… but at the end of the day, unless you really learn the skill side, you will eventually always lose out to DJs that really know how to rock. Coming from being a Hip Hop DJ for most of my life, I have been able to apply the hip hop dj skillset to playing other genres- so at a DJ Noodles show you get cutting and scratching, even rocking doubles of records, but done with all different kinds of music- It’s always a trip to come up with new things.

For Producers, just keep grinding. The whole business is relationships, and those relationships are how you get your music heard by the people that need to hear it if you are trying to place records. Be open minded, and LISTEN to the people who have advice for you. I’m so fortunate to be a part of a collective like Therapist Music because I just know that there is a whole group of people that have accomplished either more, or different things than I have, so we all bring something different to the table.

5 For The Future | JES

image

There is something magical about festivals and shows that cannot be defined in words.. But there is that one moment that captures the magic better than any other. The moment when the beat fades away, the crowd eagerly holds their collective breaths, and all of a sudden, it hits you. The most beautiful, tantalizing, soul and heart lifting vocals flow from the speakers and take you to a place, a special place, your happy place. Pure bliss. In this exact moment, you lose yourself in the music but have never felt so found. In this exact moment, you are home. If I sound like a crazy person, I apologize. But chances are, if you understand what that feeling is, you’ve experienced it before. Better are the chances that the voice you were hearing, is that belonging to world-class vocalist, Jes Brieden, better known as her stage-name, JES. For dance music enthusiasts, Jes needs no introduction. Just look at the artists she has worked with: Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Kaskade, BT, Cosmic Gate, and more. She’s collected awards from the prestigious International Dance Music Awards at Miami’s WMC and topped Billboard’s “Most Played Dance Songs of the Decade” chart (2000-2010). She has toured across 6 continents and enriched the lives of millions through her truly unique and priceless vocals. To this day, “As the Rush Comes” and “Awaken” remain one of my personal favorites to listen to on any given day. It is our honor and distinct privilege to feature Jes as our 5 For the Future artist of the week with a short interview and of course, the latest mix from her weekly series, Unleash the Beat. We touched upon various issues like her opinion on the state of EDM, festivals, alternate jobs, and more. We hope you enjoy it!

1. Introduce yourself in one simple sentence.

Hi Future FM, This is JES, Singer, Songwriter, DJ and Producer. You might know me from some of my songs such as As the Rush Comes, Imagination andGhost to name a few but there are many more!I have released 4 solo albums during the last 5 years and I am currently working on album number 5. I  tour internationally as both a performer and a dj, and I have a weekly mix show called Unleash The Beatwhich currently goes to air on over 60 stations across the globe. You can find out more info here,https://www.facebook.

2. You are a veteran of the industry and have worked with arguably the biggest names in the industry. What is your opinion on the explosion of EDM?

I think it’s been a long time coming and I’m very happy that EDM has managed to shake the somewhat niche reputation it used to have so that more people can get involved and enjoy the music, which is what it’s always been about. EDM was always ahead of the curve, but it’s recent inclusion into moremainstream events and channels has opened up a lot of opportunities for all of us and it’s been great to be working in it during a time of so much success. It’s nice to finally turn on the radio and hear EDM alongside the other genres after so many years of it being underground. I do miss the more family atmosphereand camaraderie the DJ’s and artists shared in earlier years, but I’m very happy that the amazing talents that can be found in the EDM world are finally beingrecognized. As with any trends in music to all up and coming artists and producers, what comes up usually goes back down at some point … soget involved in the scene because you have a deep seated love for the music, because thats what it’s all about.

3. If you could perform live at any festival in the world, which would it be and why?

I have been so lucky to have played at some really amazing festivals around the world but outside of the EDM world I would love to play at the GlastonburyFestival in the UK. It has such amazing diversity and history, it would be great to be a part of that. You can stay up to date with my tour schedule at my websiteor the event section of my Facebook.

4. We’re curious, if you weren’t currently a world-class vocalist, what would you be doing full-time?

Thats a tough question! I’m not a believer in having a “Plan B” if you’re going into the music business. It’s such a competitive place that if you’re holding a back upplan you’ll probably end up doing it. I’ve always only focused on music 100 percent so I never planned to be doing anything else but … I love horses and horseback riding and I would love to have a ranch or stables. I also like to draw and paint, so maybe something in the arts would be good and I also love photography. You can check out so of my instagram photography herehttp://instagram.com/officialjes.

5. Give some genuine advice to the upcoming/aspiring singers in the world.

Be prepared to work hard because it takes a lot of time and commitment to succeed in this business. It’s a commitment to your craft and being the bestyou that you can be. Practice hard and try to develop what is cool and unique about your voice. The identity and individuality of your voice is what people willremember about you so try to push that to the front in your style and performance. Try to be as healthy as you can, sleep helps and some type of regular exerciseroutine. Your voice is your instrument, so take care of it and nurture it and performing is physical so you need to be strong all around.

Event Re-cap: The Bounce Boat 5/3/13

Last Friday, we had the privilege and pleasure of attending one of the more unique events that NYC has seen in a while. From smaller lounges to mega clubs, what used to be a constant struggle to find out where and when your favorite DJ is playing, is now a struggle to decide which of your favorite DJ’s to see on any given night. Now, If you’re lucky enough, you’ll even get to see several of them in the same evening. Such was the case for us. Size Records star Tim Mason and the reigning queen of NYC house music, Miss Jennifer, graced the decks on a party thrown by our friends at Bounce Boat. Beautiful weather, a 3 floor yacht, and 4 hours of amazing music made for an incredible night cruising around the NYC harbor with the sun creating a stunning backdrop upon our departure from Pier 40.

image

First off, let me say that the guys at Bounce Media Group are easily some of the nicest, cooperative, and helpful professionals in the business. The event was run very efficiently and it was evident how much care they put into every aspect from planning to execution. We sincerely look forward to working with them again in the near future.

After getting to the boat around 7pm to set up some equipment, we were promptly given VIP passes to access all areas of the boat. The crowd was understandably diverse. You had your neon-clad EDM enthusiasts, your older/classier fans, and more. One thing was for certain, everyone was here to have a good time and to hear some great music.

Let’s make this as clear as possible: Tim blew the roof off the boat as the headliner. With his endless enthusiasm, energy, and with the help of a guest appearance by the crazy lazer and co2 wielding robot known as Jascha The Robot, Tim managed to single handedly drive the crowd into a massive frenzy of dancing. He continued to please the crowd and pump electro bombs through the speakers like his original tracks The Moment, Anima, and more.  Rather than tell you more about it, I’ll take this second to direct you to our platform where Tim’s mix has been exclusively uploaded and hosted. Enjoy.

image

On the top deck, the vibe was completely different from the main floor. It was very evident that the crowd up top had come specifically to see Miss Jennifer perform and to experience her smooth and groovy sounds. She isn’t commonly referred to as the Queen of NYC house music without reason and there is absolutely no way that a set of hers will not make you move. Not everyone can dance but when it comes to music this good, everyone tries. The cool night breeze combined with the incredible music pumping from the subwoofers made it nearly impossible to decide which floor had a better atmosphere. Either way, we were more than satisfied with the quality of music and people the entire night. Stay tuned for Miss Jennifer’s set from the Bounce Boat but in the meantime, enjoy access to her summer mix series on Thefuture.fm.
